Summer is winding down and so is YogaPalooza, our 12th annual Summer On The Mat. Just two weeks – and five classes – left. Boy, summer flies by, doesn’t it?
Three classes, including our final Saturday morning class of the session, await you this week – each explores Yoga from a classic point-of-view, celebrating traditions that have been practiced for generations.
Here’s this week’s all-Yoga, all-classic lineup:
Monday, August 12 ~ Yoga Nidra … 4:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Yoga Nidra focuses on reconnecting and calming the mind and spirit. Not as much movement as a regular on-the-mat class, the foundation of a Yoga Nidra practice is a long and relaxing guided meditation.
Yoga Nidra is first mentioned in the Upanishads, the Yogic texts that were written between 800 and 500 B.C., where the Yoga Nidra meditation technique was described as “immensely powerful.” It was immensely powerful 3,000 years ago and it still is today.
There is a much (much) longer relaxation and meditation segment in this practice, so bring an extra layer, covering, or pillow if you like. (No napping!)
Wednesday, August 14 ~ Back To The Garden … 4:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
One of the beauties of Yoga is its flexibility – not only in its practice, but in how the practice has evolved through the years. Poses and focus are changed and refined, new styles are born, some old traditions fade into the background.
Let’s go back for just one night. Back to a time when Yoga was just a seedling in the West. When Yoga seemed exotic and, to be honest, a little weird. Before Yoga videos and sticky mats and $100 Yoga pants. To a time of Peace and Love. And, Yoga.
I love this photo of Yogi Bhajan teaching Kundalini Yoga to his students, circa 1970 (click the photo to enlarge it) …
Saturday, August 17 ~ Earth, Wind, and Fire … 9:30 a.m.
Ayurveda, the ancient science of Yoga, reminds us that each of us is composed of the elements: earth … wind … and fire.
And, ok sure, there’s water, too …
There. Earth, Wind, Fire. And, Water.
Our Ayurvedic-inspired practice will honor those elements within us as they relate to the physical body, the mind, and our natural energetic tendencies. We’ll have a little fun as we explore how each element can move our Yoga practice – and even a single pose – in very different ways. Your practice may never feel the same!
Hmmm … Earth, Wind, and Fire … that reminds me of some old songs … 🤔
(Note: The date of the Earth, Wind, and Fire class was changed to Saturday, August 17. There is NO class on August 24.)
Drop-In’s are welcome at any of these classes — $13.
Remember, there are just five classes left in our YogaPalooza Summer … be sure to get your classes in before the session winds down on August 21.
I hope to see you on the mat!
Relaxfully Yours, Jackie
