YogaPaloozaX Starts July 5!

YogaPaloozaX begins Wednesday, July 5, 2017.

Why X?

Because X means 10 and 2017 marks our 10th annual YogaPalooza – our summer of Yoga at Peaceful Hands Yoga.

If you’ve never experienced YogaPalooza … it’s my time to share special classes, following classic and not-so-classic Yoga themes. All in the spirit of bringing balance and ease. A little irreverent, sure. Sometimes goofy. Always fun.

Our first YogaPalooza was in 2008, over in a teeny-tiny space on Byrd Street. Some of you might remember. The session was teeny-tiny, too … just four classes long, but two of those classes have been part of YogaPalooza ever since.

This year’s YogaPalooza runs for 8 weeks and includes 18 classes!

The calendar gets a little goofy, too, so please note the three Saturdays and one Friday when we will have class (and the Monday and Wednesday dates when we won’t).

Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio

228 Warren Street (in the Sedwick Racquetball Club) in Orange, Virginia

18 classes.  8 weeks.  Yup, that’s a lot of Yoga in YogaPaloozaville.  Here’s the schedule …

Times are 4:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. for Monday & Wednesday classes and the Friday class. Saturday classes are at 9:30 a.m.

(The current Mo’Spring Session runs through Wednesday, June 28. No classes on Monday, July 3.)

WEDNESDAY, JULY 5 ~ OPENING NIGHT … For our first night in YogaPaloozaVille, some of our favorite asanas take center stage – spoiler alert: there will be at least one downward facing dog.

MONDAY, JULY 10 ~ VINYASA, PART I, “ROCK”  Get your Yoga flowing with a breath-led, refreshing, and classic Vinyasa practice, that starts with Mountain, your rock.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 12 ~ VINYASA, PART II, “ROLL” … Not every Vinyasa starts standing, you know. This slow-flow, not-so-classic Vinyasa practice can lubricate sticky joints and refresh body, mind, and heart.

SATURDAY, JULY 15, 9:30 a.m. ~ “PLAY YOUR WAY TO BETTER BALANCE” … Certified Trager® Practitioner Carrie Heitsch leads this class that will use imagery, sensory input, and playful movement  to explore the process of finding, maintaining, and improving balance.  Prerequisites: must be able to walk, but need not be able to chew gum at the same time.  (Bring your mat and dress as you would for a Yoga class.) (90-minute class.)

MONDAY, JULY 17 ~ SPINE AWAKENING … Your spine can move in 7 directions — but only if you let it. Renew the suppleness of your back and refresh your spine.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 19 ~ PEACEFUL WARRIOR … Embrace your inner power with a focus on grounding, alignment, and the sweet openness of Warrior poses. [MAKE-UP DATE: MONDAY, AUGUST 28]

(No classes on Monday, July 24.)

WEDNESDAY, JULY 26 ~ LET’S TWIST AGAIN … “We’re gonna twisty twisty twisty till we tear the house down.” I think you know what’s going on here.

MONDAY, JULY 31 ~ REGGAE … Reggae and African beats provide the rhythm for an enlivening and inspiring practice.  Registered Students Only.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2 ~ HAPPY HIPS … Perfect for hippies, hipsters, and hip cats. Your hips will like it, too.

MONDAY, AUGUST 7 ~ YOGA NIDRA   An amazing Yogic deep relaxation journey in the classic tradition.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 9 ~ SUN & MOON FLOW …  Sun & Moon Salutations will fire you up & cool you off in perfect harmony

SATURDAY, AUGUST 12, 9:30 a.m. ~ “SWEET 16” … One of my most beloved teachers, Margaret Leary, joins us again at YogaPalooza with a special Resistance-Flexibility-Strength-Training (RFST) practice, sharing 16 exercises that can help renew suppleness in the body’s connective tissue and fascia. It’s a wonderful addition to your Yoga practice. (Bring your mat and dress as you would for a Yoga class.) (90-minute class.)

MONDAY, AUGUST 14 ~ “GOOD VIBRATIONS”  Focusing on the deepest energy of the body, we’ll use Yoga, acupressure points, and humming vibrations to encourage good health from top to bottom. You’ll sparkle from the inside out.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16 ~ MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR YOGA  Yeah-Yeah-Yeah, it’s back for its 10th magical year!  Registered Students Only.

MONDAY, AUGUST 21 ~ TIBETAN YANTRA … Enjoy this special Tibetan Yoga practice with a focus on Yantras, sequences of poses that help find space between the joints and unlock the bones.

(No classes on Wednesday, August 23.)

FRIDAY, AUGUST 25 ~ YIN … Holding Yin Yoga poses for many focused breaths allows you to let go and say “ahhhh.” This traditional practice is the perfect peaceful finish to your week.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 26, 9:30 a.m. ~ EARTH, WIND, & FIRE … Ayurveda, the science of Yoga, reminds us that we are earth … wind … and fire.  This Ayurvedic-inspired practice honors those elements within us. (And, yes, we’ll probably honor the band Earth, Wind, & Fire at some point, too.)

MONDAY, AUGUST 28 ~ PEACEFUL WARRIOR … Embrace your inner power with a focus on grounding, alignment, and the sweet openness of Warrior poses. (This is the make-up for the July 19 class.)

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30 ~ X … Our 10th annual YogaPalooza draws to a close, with a special celebration of X, which, as you know, “marks the spot” and stands for 10 and serves as the focus of this class.

Peaceful Hands Yoga … Where Yoga Happens.

The Yoga of Music & Chant …

I hope last night’s Yoga class that entwined vibration and sound energized your practice. (After a full day of chanting, I’m just getting my voice back this morning!)

If you’d like to continue to incorporate the beneficial energy of sound, vibration, and chant with your practice, I have a couple copies of Awakening Spirit ~ The Yoga Of Music & Chant available.  It’s a two-CD set and it includes the chant we learned in class: Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu (May all beings be happy & free).

awakening spirit

Alongside the familiar Yoga practice of movement and meditation is the ancient Yoga of Music and Chant whose goal is to open your heart, awaken your mind, and arouse your spirit. Russill Paul is a modern master of this practice.

CD 1 Nada: Awakening Spirit: Russill’s remarkable Nada Yoga chanting is accompanied by his own ten-stringed hybrid instrument called a Unitar, Bansuri flute, Indian percussion, Sarangi, and Tanpura. Nada can be used for meditation, or to fill a room with uplifting energy. Chanting along is almost irresistible.

CD 2 Shabda: Mantra Mysticism: An ensemble of traditional and contemporary instruments supports Russill’s inspiring chanting. Listen quietly to go on an inward journey through meditative states, or chant along and be bathed in these healing sonic energies. Russill has shared the stage with many musical luminaries, and has performed for His Holiness the Dalai Lama. “His fusion of the sounds of India with the energy and technology of contemporary Western music produces a sound unequaled since George Harrison collaborated with Ravi Shankar in the late 1960s.”– Arlo Guthrie

This special two-CD set is $12.  UPDATE: The “Awakening Spirit” 2-CD set is now sold out.  If you’d like me to order another copy for you, just let me know (it usually takes about a week to get it).  Plus, there are other chanting and toning CDs available at the Peaceful Hands shop … including the following CD with chants done by one of the world’s most beautiful voices:

I also have a few copies of Deva Premal’s beautiful Healing Mantras available.

deva premal

Peace. Abundance. Compassion. Physical healing. These are just some of the universal aspirations we can usher into our lives through dedicated mantra practice. At once a serene listening experience and a powerful tool for transformation, Deva Premal’s Healing Mantras presents 17 Indian and Tibetan chants, each repeated 108 times in keeping with tradition. Selected by Deva herself for use as part of a daily practice or to permeate any space with healing energy, Deva is joined by the chanting of Buddhist Monks.

This CD is $11.

There are some other beautiful chant and vibrational music CDs that are also in our little “shop” at the studio. I keep just a few CDs in stock and if you’d like me to put something aside for you, please let me know. Email me at jackie@peacefulhands.com

Yoga & Karate Come Together at YogaRaté, Thursday 8/11

Karate Inspiration

YogaPalooza is in the home stretch.  (Home STRETCH … get it?)

Our YogaPalooza classes continue on Mondays and Wednesdays at 4:30 and 6:00 p.m. through August 26.

And, this week, YogaPalooza has a special “play date” with you on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.!

Join Black Belt Karate instructor, Dan Paterson, for YogaRaté , Thursday, August 11 at Peaceful Hands Yoga in Orange, Virginia. One class only – 5:30 p.m.

Many of you know Dan from our Yoga classes. I’m delighted that he also teaches Karate for Adults at Peaceful Hands on Tuesday and Thursday nights. He’s prepared this special class especially for YogaPalooza.

Dan karate pic

Dan is a 6th degree black belt who has been practicing for 30 years and teaching for the past 15.  And, because of his Yoga practice, he knows first-hand how the rich traditions of these two practices complement each other.

Dan explains …

Our Yogapalooza Yogaraté class is an introduction to the common origin and goals of Yoga and the Okinawan Martial Art Isshinryu (One Heart Way). We’ll explore some interesting parallels between the two practices, dispel common myths, and learn that often there are many ways to achieve the same objectives.

You’ll learn some Karate-based training methods that may be used to enhance your Yoga practice and some simple and practical self-protection techniques.

The level of physical activity and ability will be no greater than that of a beginner’s Yoga class. No worries, participation is limited to each person’s comfort zone.

Self-protection skills lead to self-confidence. Self-confidence is empowering and leads to a peaceful nature. Once inner peace is achieved, the search for enlightenment is possible.  You’ll see that Yoga and Karate share much in common.

Okinawan Karate traces its origin back to India. An Indian Buddhist Monk Bodhidharma introduced Yoga-inspired training to Chinese Monks at the Shaolin Temple. Due to trade routes with China, Okinawans learned these practices and brought them back to their home. Over the centuries the practices were adapted and modified to fit the Okinawan people and their culture.

Television and movies often give the wrong impression of Karate, implying that it is an aggressive practice. In fact, there is no “first strike” in Karate. In its basic form techniques learned are for self-protection and the protection of others only.  The ultimate goal, as in Yoga, is inner peace and enlightenment.

Dan’s class is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Dress for a Yoga-style class and bring your mat. (You may not need your mat, but, just in case, have it handy.)

I hope you’ll join us!

YogaRaté is part of our ongoing YogaPalooza session.  It is included in the Unlimited Class option or counts for one class of the 8-class session.  Drop-in’s may attend for $13.

Check out the full YogaPalooza schedule here.

If you have any questions about this or any other upcoming class, email me at jackie@peacefulhands.com

“Sweet 16” Workshop This Saturday, 8/6 at 9:30 a.m.

sweet 16

Join one of my favorite Yoga and natural health instructors Margaret Leary and experience the “Sweet 16” energy flow series this Saturday, August 6 at 9:30 a.m. at Peaceful Hands Yoga in Orange, Virginia.

margaretleary

Margaret explains what the “Sweet 16” can do for you …

The Sweet 16 is an energy flow series of movement that follows the subtle energy channels of the body following Traditional Chinese Medicine. In our workshop, we will explore, through 16 specially designed exercises, the flow pattern moving from the yang (active energy) to the yin (quiet energy) through the lower body to the upper body and back again. By following these pathways, through specific exercises, energy is released and the resistance of the moves creates a feeling of lightness in the body as energy is moved from one muscle group on to the next.

The Sweet 16 is part of an overall Resistance Flexibility Strength Training (RFST) system. It is a system of exercise, movement, stretching, and resisting.  It cleanses and strengthens the physical body, but its effects will be felt on the spiritual, psychological, and emotional levels as well. As RFST Founder Bob Cooley has said, RFST is about “becoming flexible in ALL ways.”

Doing the Sweet 16 on a daily basis is like “brushing your teeth”… an inner body cleansing that will leave your body prepared to dance, play golf, do Yoga, or take part in the FUN activity of your choice.

Come feel the experience!

Margaret’s workshop will run from 9:30 until 11 a.m.  Dress for a Yoga-style class and bring your mat.

“Sweet 16” is part of our ongoing YogaPalooza session.  It is included in the Unlimited Class option or counts for one class of the 8-class session.  Drop-in’s may attend for $13.

Check out the full YogaPalooza schedule here.

If you have any questions about this or any other class on our upcoming YogaPalooza schedule, email me at jackie@peacefulhands.com

Maybe that can be our YogaPalooza motto:

That’s our YogaPalooza Kick Off Contest: Special prize for the best YogaPalooza 2016 motto. Just leave it below in the comments section below … or email it to me at jackie@peacefulhands.com.

In the meantime, I hope you’ll take a couple minutes to unroll your mat at home.

YogaPalooza Week 5 ~ That’s A Wrap (Almost)

We’ve done it!

We’ve made it through another summer of YogaPalooza!

Almost.

Because, there are three classes this week … three more chances to get your Yoga on in YogaPaloozaVille. (Until the Fall Session, anyway.)

Monday, August 24 ~ All About The Balance

It has been incredibly gratifying to me that many of you have been fretting about this class for eight weeks now. 🙂

Don’t let a little balance scare you. A little concentration, a little playfulness, a little strength, a little gentleness. That’s all you need. I promise. You are perfect and so is your asana. We all fall from time to time. At least we tried.

balance order

Wednesday, August 26 ~ Yin Yoga

Yin is a deep and introspective Yoga practice. Asanas are held for longer periods, allowing the body and mind some extra time to let go. The practice targets our deeper connective tissue, as well as the mind and heart. It is a wonderful transformative practice.

We do have a limited number of studio blankets for cushioning when we’re in these poses for a longer spell, so if you’re in the 4:30 class and can bring a small blanket or towel with you on Wednesday that would be helpful.

Friday, August 28 ~ Closing Ceremonies, YogaPalooza 2015

8 Summer Weeks. 18 Classes. Whether you came for one class, or eight, or all 18, I hope you’ll join me on Friday for one last summer evening in YogaPaloozaVille.

And, About That Fall Session …

Just a reminder, we will take the following week off – August 31 and September 2. The Fall Session begins Labor Day Week (I’m still not sure whether we’ll start on Labor Day Monday or that Wednesday. Stay tuned.)

I’ve enjoyed spending my eighth summer with you in YogaPaloozaVille. Each and every one of you who takes time out of your week to unroll your Yoga mat with me makes my heart smile. You rock. You really, really do. I consider Peaceful Hands Yoga a family – and I’m so glad that you’re part of it with me.

I hope to see you this week … and, in the meantime, keep picking up …
